ABOVE: This map shows the majority of the area which was occupied by the small fishing village of Brighthelmstone, which would later become Brighton. The Pavilion is a prominent feature, top left of the picture. Notice that the coastline in this area is very different from the present day. The "Blockhouse", which is the building in the centre of the shoreline at the bottom of the map is the exact spot on which the enterence of the Palace Pier now stands, albeit about 12 foot further inland.
